How should I begin restarting my new horse using Natural Horsemanship?

I can’t afford a trainer. Any tips you can give me would be great!

I am an experienced horseback rider, as I’ve been riding for over 15 years. I currently ride dressage, but I have a lot of experince with Natural horsemanship. I would definitely recommend using Monty Roberts’ Join-Up method. I have found it to be very effective. I have done it with one of my horses and it helped to strengthen our bond, making us better partners. I have heard that Parelli is effective, but I have found it to be more commercial and less about the well-being of the horse. Go to www.montyroberts.com for more info!

Does anyone study Parelli Natural Horsemanship in the UK?

If so, what level are you at? And how long did it take you to get to that level?

I’m in Northwest England. I started studying Parelli around four months ago. So far I have been using it with my two and a half year old, with great results, but haven’t really done much with my older horse yet.
I find the people who criticise Parelli haven’t really studied the methods, or have tried it without actually understanding what it is they are trying to achieve.

I plan to be assessed for my level one next spring, when my youngster is ready for backing, but I would love to become a PNH trainer in the future.

Who do you think is the best Natural Horsemanship trainer in America or the World?

Out of the many many trainer in the United States who do you like the best for Natural horsemanship? I like to be gentle with my horses, but I am not afraid to be harsh as long as it is not to harsh. I am getting ready to train my little three year old and I would like to know what you recommend. Thanks in advance.

please dont be a parelli freak…the methods don’t work. I Have had friends try them, they really dont work. There is too much physcolagy involved with that dude, Clinton anderson gets straight to the point. And parelli is like "my methods only work if you buy my products"

And really natrual horsemanship is having to use the forse that you need to, not more. Well thats what i consider it to be anyways.

and yes being gentle is good, but remember if your to gentle your horse will run over you. People are like "I dont want to slap my horse its mean!" but really your horse CAN and WILL run over you in an instant, and its upsetting to think about that they don’t always have as much respect as you have for them, but thats why you need to be firm so they dont do that

How can I get into natural horsemanship without straining my budget?

I would REALLY like to be able to do some form of natural horsemanship with my horse, but parelli is very expensive and I just can’t afford it. Does anybody know of any other type of Natural horsemanship i can do?

You don’t need to buy anyone’s packaged "program," and especially not Parelli’s. . . . .

"Natural horsesmanship" is nothing more than attempting as best you can to see the world from the horse’s perspective, and to train him in ways that make sense to him and encourage him to give you the response you want, without resorting to causing him pain. If you’re new to horses and really don’t understand how they think (or have been around horses a long time, and still don’t understand how they think!) get some books and start reading (online, tack store or library) – there are some really good classic works on horse behaviour, classical dressage and western- – and find someone who’s really experienced at training and good at it who will tolerate you watching them and asking them questions (if you can find such a rare creature).
Don’t get caught up in the slick packaging of some of the current celeb-trainers. I will add that I do admire Chris Cox, Tommy Garland, John Lyons, and some of the others whose names I don’t recall, who are down to earth and not trying to sell beginners a bunch of overpriced, renamed training tools.

Can i do natural horsemanship and ride Hunter jump at the same time?

ok so heres my plan:

I have been on and off with english(this includes dressage, saddle seat, and hunterjump) and natural horsemanship (parelli, but soon to start riding clinton).

I luv to jump! and want to start doing cross country once i find a barn that does it. But i also love doing natural stuff. if i find a natural trainer do u think i could also jump?

Yes you can do both, but why are you starting Clinton Anderson instead? Clinton discourages Natural horsemanship for the type of riding you are looking to get into, however Parelli encourages it. Walter Zettle, world renowned dressage master, recommends natural horsemanship (Parelli) as the best foundation for ANY type of riding. In this month’s (May) issue of Dressage today he writes about it. Even Lauren Barwick competed in China in the paralympics and won both gold and silver medals.
