Natural horsemanship: can anyone become a good horse owner?

Anyone *who wants to learn* can become a good horse owner. If they’re in it to show off, or to puff up their miserable little egos, they don’t stand much chance of becoming anything but puffed-up ego (just look at the rodeo clown who has made millions selling the name "natural"! I wouldn’t let him near one of my horses!).

And I don’t think a person’s quality as a horse owner has anything to do with the term Natural horsemanship. If they understand horses, give them good care, and communicate effectively with them, I don’t care if they do dressage or rodeo or just putz along the trails, they’re good horse owners.

Hello, My parents are searching for a farm where i can have horse(s)?

I have taken horse ridding lessons for about a year and i have taken 3 weeks of hunter and the rest in western (they were private lessons).
I am really experinced in western and still working on hunter.I think i would get a gelding horse but what breed should i get? i was thinking a morgan or a quarter horse…

Breed of horse make very little difference.
I have a thoroughbred and I ride western mostly some english also.
Get a horse that is able to perform the things you want to do when you ride like trail ride or jump or dressage or what ever you would like to do. Look not so much at breed but the ability of the horse and be sure to match its tempermant to yours and be sure the horses ability meets your needs and abilities as well.

How should I begin restarting my new horse using Natural Horsemanship?

I can’t afford a trainer. Any tips you can give me would be great!

I am an experienced horseback rider, as I’ve been riding for over 15 years. I currently ride dressage, but I have a lot of experince with Natural horsemanship. I would definitely recommend using Monty Roberts’ Join-Up method. I have found it to be very effective. I have done it with one of my horses and it helped to strengthen our bond, making us better partners. I have heard that Parelli is effective, but I have found it to be more commercial and less about the well-being of the horse. Go to www.montyroberts.com for more info!

What’s it like taking horseback riding lessons?

I’m thinking of taking Horseback Riding Lessons. I’m 16 almost 17 and I’m a bit worried that I’m too old to start? I don’t know… I’ve always loved horses and I regret not taking lessons as a young child.

Can you tell me what it’s like taking lessons? Are they usually group lessons or private? Group lessons are cheaper, right? And how much do lessons usually cost?

Is horseback riding overall a fun sport, or is it stressful? Thanks for all of your help!

You’re not at all too old to start; there are TONS of people who don’t start riding until they’re in their 30’s or 40’s. There’s no set age limit on when you can start to learn how to ride; it’s timeless. :]

As for what lessons are like; it depends on what style you’re riding. English or Western. Both are amazing disciplines, with their challenges and difficulties. With Western, you’re able to do barrel racing, roping, Western pleasure, and tons of other things (that I can’t think of off the top of my head ). As for English, there’s jumping, dressage, English pleasure, and, again, tons of others. Both disciplines trail ride as well.

As for group or private, that’s up to you. Group lessons are usually cheaper, yes, but but usually not by much. At my barn, and at some of the other barns I’ve been to in my area, the group lessons were all around $40, and the privates were all around $45. I would recommend, however, that you start off with a few private lessons. That way, as you’re learning the basics and working on your form, cues, etc, you have one-on-one time with the instructor, and they can focus entirely on you. That way, when you do start taking group lessons, you’re ready for it, and not left wondering what’s going on. To sum it up, privates for the first few lessons or so is a good way to make sure you have the basics and such down before going into a group setting.

Overall, it’s a very fun sport. Of course, like any sport, it has it’s stressful moments (the horse won’t listen, something else is going on, etc), but most often those are few and far between. It’s…well, there’s really no words to describe it that can give it justice. When you ride, it feels like you’re flying, like you’re one with the horse, and that it’s just the two of you racing through time. :]

Where in or close to Garland, Texas can I learn to ride a horse?

I have always wanted to learn to ride a horse. I have never ridin a horse but yet I love horses, animals and have a certain connection with animals. I would like to know where and what it’d cost to learn to ride horses close to where I live.

im not so sure where you can learn to ride. but think about what type of riding do you want to do? english or western. (texas mainly do western)
what type of eventing do you want to do? racing, dressage,show jumping, cross country, endurance, gymkhanas, barrel racing, herding, trail riding, etc.
do you want to learn Natural horsemanship, as well as riding?
are you going to do weekly lessons?

best place to find is on the yellow pages, get their address, and go up for the weekend and see the riding centers you decide to see.
don’t rush into it. it may take months before you find the right one, that suits you.
