I am looking to for a new horseback riding program; I have been riding horses since I was ten. I ride at Ride On. I have a small muscular disability but I can ride independently. I am at an Advanced Trot. I ride in an English saddle and have my own saddle. I won numerous ribbons from horse shows.

That’s great- congrats! There are a few good places to ride in the Malibu area, the largest and best place was Calalmigos Ranch, but I believe they are closed now. Here are some other places- I like Adventures on Horseback best.

I am coming from NJ and want to go horseback riding. I went a few years ago somewhere in PA but I don’t remember where or the name of the place. I think we went through Valley Forge. Anyone know of a good place to go that is not too far from the Philly area?

I live in Saint Louis, MO and don’t know of any place to go horseback riding where you can "rent" a horse and go horseback riding EXCEPT for Marquette State Park.

I’m fifteen and I’m having my first ever horseback riding lesson on Wednesday, it’d be great if you can tell me what to expect. Thank you in advance!

Hi! I’m 13 and riding and horses are my life!!

first of all, when you go to your lesson, if you don’t have breeches, wear boots or tennis shoes, boots prefered, jeans, and a polo shirt or t-shirt, polo shirt prefered. dont forget a helmet, wheather it be your or your trainer’s.

For your first lesson (I ride western, by the way) your instructor will meet you, show you how to catch and halter the horse, and then you tie it up and you will groom it. you will also pick out the hooves, and remember to pick them out away from you so you don’t hurt the horse, but your trainer will help you out. when your grooming the horse, be sure to ask questions, weather they be about riding, the horse, etc because this is a good time for that.
after that, you will tack your horse up, you know, put the blanket, saddle, and bridle on. At first it might be a bit confusing to remember all of those steps, but you’ll learn fast and your instructor will help. After grooming and tacking, you get to ride! If your horse is taller, you’ll need a mounting block so you can get into the saddle easier and won’t mess your saddle up. at first you will go slow, walking and maybe trotting, but be patient! it takes years to master the perfect positions in the saddle, and just enjoy the ride. afterall, even when you start cantering, posting, and jumping, you have to walk for about 5 minutes to warm up & cool down. remember, your trainer knows when your ready to get a younger horse and go faster…. here are some tips….

1. keep your heels down – helps with balance
2. keep your hands "quiet" and dont stick your elbows out & "chicken wing it" as my instructor says
3. sit kind of close to the pommel because that’s what u do in english riding
4. listen to your instructor – they have years of experience
5. if you have a question… ask it! better to ask then not know!
6. be the best rider you can be, belive in your self (even if it sound cheesy!), be careful but confident, respect your horse, and try your hardest— riding isn’t easy, it is one of the hardest and most dangerous sports, but is one of the most rewarding things you can do!!!

Langley which is just outside of Vancouver is your best bet for trail rides.
Most of the tours are guided. But if you have experience riding horses it may be different.

i would highly suggest the Langley 204, because from what i know they are the only ones that will allow you to use the trails on your own so you can ACTUALLY have a nice romantic day without having to follow a tour guide.

Paradise.  For some, the word conjures up images of white sand beaches, clear blue water and little fruity drinks.  Not me. 

For me, terms like ‘white sand beaches and clear blue water’ sounds a little like the beginning of a worn out slogan, the tropical vacation version of ‘order now, operators are standing by’.  It may be that I’m jaded by the over-the-top advertising or maybe I just imagine a white sand beach with 5000 overweight pasty Americans overrunning it.  Whatever the case, I don’t want the same old thing.

My paradise is different.  Since it’s a Honeymoon paradise, the most important element of course, is my significant other.  For me, that’s all the people I really need.  I want to spend time with my new bride, and share some experiences that are really different.  We have beaches and fruity drinks in California, and picking from the top 10 vacations menu seemed like a sure-fire route to sameness.  I recoil at sameness and thought I could do better for our honeymoon.

I thought about it.  I looked on the web.  I talked to people.  I had always liked the green feeling of the Pacific Northwest, but the idea of a Honeymoon to Seattle didn’t really captivate me.  I had loved learning to ski in Utah when I was young, and have always gravitated towards mountains, but my new bride loves the water (though not necessarily the beaches in the worn out brochure).  The elements I wanted to include in our vacation seemed to be accumulating and I didn’t have a plan yet. 

When I added something seemingly obscure to my wish list, the solution actually became easier.  We had been to Alaska in 2001 on a bicycle ride to raise money for AIDS research and had experienced, albeit at a distance, the Matanuska glacier.  We were intrigued by the idea of a glacier in person – climbing it, touching it, experiencing a frozen goliath that seemed ancient.  We had an agenda though, and we moved on.  The great Matanuska and the idea of a glacier experience was mostly forgotten.  Until now.

Glaciers actually brought it together.  The mountains, the water, fewer people, open, unspoiled nature and someplace we’d never been were the core pieces.  When I added glaciers, something new popped up – Iceland.  We wanted something different and exciting and we were going to get it.  Yes, it is more than slightly north of the equator, with not so much of the fruity drinks. 

There was to be one other benefit for me, too.  Among the elements of an Icelandic adventure, I could squeeze in the guilty pleasure of a tour in a Super Jeep, or in American terms, a monster truck.  If I offered my new bride a long weekend trip or short vacation stateside that centered around giant SUVs and off-road touring, there would have to be some reciprocal girly trip in recent context to pull that off, or maybe some jewelry.  In Iceland, I figured we could do several things and when I brought up the Super Jeeps, she’d probably dig it.  …I still stacked the deck by setting up a horseback riding day in advance.

How did it go?

The trip was a hit!  From the moment that the crisp, clean air greeted us in Keflavik, we were in another world.  We had trailside meals on a quiet mountainside, bathed in hot springs and heated lagoons (we had warmth and a beach, just not in the common way!) and rode Icelandic horses.  We spent a little time in Reykjavik too, enjoying the nightlife a bit, but the time we spent outside was the best part of the experience.  The trip was otherworldly and left us wanting to return.  Fortunately, anniversaries provide a great reason to go back!
