You will find this advanced maneuver is not so easily answered in text, but I shall do my best to explain the basics of a lead change.

First of all a horse should be picking up the correct and counter lead when asked 100% of the time and should be able to perform simple lead changes before even attempting a flying lead change.

Sure, you might get lucky and accomplish it, but it will be far from correct. Anyway, the horse and rider should be balanced at the walk, trot, canter and should have mastered basic to advanced body control. When I say this I mean the horse willingly moves his shoulders, ribs, and hips. He should also understand vertical and lateral flexion as well as how to bend his body. Not to mention must grasp the concept of rounding the back and driving underneath themselves with the hindquarters (aka collection).

Sound simple? Think again for this is merely the foundation that equestrians use to build a flawless flying or interrupted lead change.

You must also understand the rhythm of a canter. The correct execution of his gait is three beats. Next time you watch a horse canter or lope, take a close look at how his legs move. When transitioning into the canter going to the left the horse first strikes off with the right hind hoof, then the left hind and the right fore move in unison, and lastly the left fore finishes the stride (and this is your left lead). When going to the right the horse’s left hind hoof begins the stride, followed by the right hind and left fore moving in unison, then lastly the right fore finishing the stride (hence your right read).

Make sense?

Before you can think about a flying lead change you must understand the biomechanics of the horse and what it takes to reach that level of performance. Without this you will find your horse picking up wrong leads, cross-cantering, and not picking up the leads correctly on all four legs. I could continue rambling on, but it’s getting late so I’m afraid I’m going to sum up lead changes in a nut shell.

It’s all about hip control. Think back on how all of your canter departures start on that hind left or right hoof. If I shift my horse’s hip to the left and squeeze my right leg he is prepared to pick up the left lead. If I shift my horse’s hip to the right and squeeze with the left leg he is prepared to pick up the right lead. When you squeeze your leg against the side you are not just asking for impulsion to the canter. You are actually asking for your horse to tilt his hip towards the inside of the arena AND then DRIVE that outside hind to pick up the inside lead.

So that goes back to cantering and simple lead changes. We haven’t even touched flying lead changes. Hopefully I gave you enough to mentally chew on till you’re trainer thinks you’re ready. Chances are,… if she hasn’t mentioned it yet it’s for a reason. Don’t get in a rush, or else you’ll skip steps. Training horses and riders is like building a house… first you have to pour the cement and lay a foundation before you can start building up to the more complex stuff.

ETA: Oh, and I forgot to mention. You do not want a horse that swaps or changes leads automatically. Think on your competitions, disciplines such as Dressage, Hunt Seat Equitation, Western Horsemanship, Western Riding, Reining. Flying lead changes and counter canters are commonplace. You will get penalized if your horse assume he needs to pick up the inside lead every time or if your horse anticipates when the lead change needs to occur. A well trained horse should wait quietly until the cue is given.

I nt to give my brother and sister horse back riding lessons. I am looking for some games that help them to keep their heels down and to keep their back up and to help them on their transitoions.can u please help i want to take them to shows but they need to learn how to ride soon.If you do leave a comment, can you please label what the game would help eather sitting up straight,keeping heels down, or transitions.

if you had more then just 2 people you are teaching musical chairs is really fun. you can set chairs at each end of a field and stuff. unless your horse is trainer or just lazy alot of horses spook so you cant swing or throw or make loud noises. i do not know lol see who can spin around the fastest.

It sounds amazing… but my dad is really stressed with work and bills and money and other adult things. So not the best time. At all. I was just bored not going to school on campus and was jealous that my brothers got all the sports and instruments and other school activites, so I wanted to do some sort of activity too. But really my dad is already stressed with enough things… so how do I make them believe I’m just not interested in it anymore?

If things were really bad, they’d probably tell you. If they’re like most parents, they know that horseback riding lessons aren’t necessary for your survival, and they won’t pay for it if they can’t. The fact that they’re willing to do it–even though it may be tough right now–shows that they care about you and want you to do something you enjoy. Let them! Yes, talk to them and tell them that you understand if they can’t (essentially, give them an "out"), but show your appreciation for their willingness to do so.

Also, I agree with Julie–why not help pay for it? Either get a job and pay for it directly, or offer to help around the house more (babysitting your brothers if they’re young, chores/odd jobs, etc.) to relieve some of the burden on them. But it makes complete sense that you would want–and need–some sort of physical activity and outlet if you aren’t able to be involved in other activities (I assume you’re homeschooled?). If you want to be around horses but the lessons themselves are too expensive, see if you can just volunteer at a barn–maybe even in exchange for a lesson occasionally. You’ll be occupied rather than bored, you’ll enjoy the horses, and you’ll save your parents money.

i am 14 and i want to get horse back riding lessons but my family is on a little budget. im looking for one that is close to kingwood texas. ive been getting tips from my friends at a place that i voulenteer at… we get to ride when all the lesssons are done(its a riding place for disabled kids) ive been doin the for a little over 2 years. i dont really care what kind of lessons i get, i kinda want to go into jumping but my comfidence isnt all that great. if any one can help i would greatly appreasheate it.

well i just started horse back riding lessons and my trainer told me to buy gloves, helmet and boots. but not long boots ( or field boots)because you only really need them for show and she said to hold off on that. she also said to buy paddock boots. so i was wandering if i should buy some breeches to and chaps so when i wear my breeches they won’t get torn up. i was wandering too if there is anything else i need to buy and if so please tell me. also here is the link to the breeches, paddock boots, and chaps too look and review the price, type, and quality and tell me if they are a good deal and will work well…. thanks and bye

Instead of wearing breeches for lessons, i wear practice tights. Breeches in my opinion are not always so comfy. The practice riding pants are more comfortable, usually cheaper, and they are easy to replace. Arait is a good brand for boots, but if you are just starting then you may just want to go with a cheaper brand. Half chaps are a great idea. They are soo comfortable, and they give you a better grip while riding. I wear The Elite brand for half chaps and i love them…Have fun riding!!

i really want to know about Horse Back Riding Lessons. in the summer (its fall/winter November right now) i am going to try a lesson and i am super excited! so I’m trying to figure out all the basics, before i go. and i am learning all the breeds (there’s like over 300 in the world) and i wrote them all down too. i’m studying because i want to be the best i can be. i’m only a teenager. so please help me, and give me some tips! well yea and i want a horse later on in life, for me and my kid ( i will have) and i have big goals for myself! puh-leezz HELP!!! convincing to do a whole yearly riding lessons, would be awesome too! i know it costs a lot of money, and all, and i just moved across the country and everything.. but still. my only other pet, is my kitten. (she’s adorable!) but yeaa i want a horse, and riding lessons.
i don’t have much of a backyard, but that could be arranged!

I used to ride, too, and I wish I could do it now. I will take up riding again, when I have the time and $$$.

Do you want to learn English, or Western? I’ve tried both.

I much prefer Western style horseback riding. English is really elegant and I like to watch it, but I didn’t like the little tiny saddle, posting, etc. Western is much more fun, at least it was for me.

The best advice I can give, with my personal experience, is to be picky.

I’ve learned to be really selective when choosing a riding instructor. Shop around, ask questions, get recommendations. I had one who absolutely sucked… this person would take their kids to the stables with them and spend most of my lesson time yelling at her kids not to play with snakes, etc. I got almost no personal attention… and I was wasting my money, not to mention a safety issue.

I miss riding and look forward to doing it again… and I hope it works out for you to have lessons soon.
