Does anyone have suggestions for fun activities to do when teaching beginner horseback riding lessons?

Sunday Dec 14, 2008

I teach beginner riding lessons (ages 8-12) and I am looking for fun, fresh teaching ideas so I can mix up the lessons a bit.

I spent a couple of years teaching beginner flat lessons to 8 to 10-year-olds. One way to improve balance and make students more comfortable on the horse (assuming you're working with safe, easygoing horses) is to play Simon Says. Have the group walk around the ring and make them follow different commands, such as simon says put both reins in your right hand, simon says put your left hand on your head, simon says drop your right stirrup, etc.

Another idea is to practice different movement patterns, like figure eights and serpentines. I've always really enjoyed serpentines, and it's a great way to teach turning skills (emphasize turning off the leg and using less rein, making turns evenly spaced and moving straight across the ring).

Young riders also seem to really enjoy poles and cavaletti. Horses will just walk or trot over them, but the students feel like they're starting to learn how to jump. Practice riding over the center of the pole and keeping eyes up. You could even set up a line of poles or create a little "course" to follow.

My horseback riding lessons[western] 7/24/08

Friday Dec 12, 2008

i am the girl in the blue shirt with a number 5 on the back, the horse im riding is a Morgan and his name is Casey. He likes me but he wasnt trained properly so stonegate stables bought him and now hes being trained the right way. i helped them train him a little bit. hes still a baby, but he was being a bit stubborn, but it was only because he was trained to do that stuff. He is adorable and i love him, and surprisingley he likes me back. the part where im just standing ther, he kept nudging me and rubbing his head up against mine. hes the cutest thing. i’d ride him anyday. :D
the other girl riding with me on the paint horse was named Brianna. shes really nice but she younger than me, im not sure how old though. the horse she was riding was named Mariah, and she is a sweetheart too. she will do anything you’ll tell her too in a heart beat.

What are good resources regarding horseback riding?

Friday Dec 12, 2008

I am looking for either good websites or books (please, ones that you know and trust, not that you just now googled) regarding basic horseback riding form and vocabulary. I rode when I was younger for about seven years, and would like to do some research before picking it up again. I rode western then, but am open to information on english as well.

Hunter/Jumper is right. Horseback Riding for Dummies is an excellent little refresher! I still refer back to it when I cannot figure something out. Another resource I really like is Horse Channel.com. It is a very friendly community of horse lovers that is getting pretty popular. You can ask questions on the forum or read articles on specific training techniques. It would be a really good refresher to just read the articles and maybe you will remember some stuff. Okay and for the last one…Get Young Rider magazine. We get it at our barn and I read some of the articles for ideas to teach. It has informative very descriptive and informative articles. Really any book about horseback riding could give you some tips to get back into it. Good luck, and e-mail me if you need to find a riding stable in your area..I know lots of them!
